It's related to both, but separate (actually, Wikipedia notes that cognitive dissonance is the opposite of doublethink).  It actually comes very close to a strict definition of doublethink, but the Orwellian application usually implies that one of the two ideas is known to be a blatant lie, and that the doublethink is externally opposed.   People fulfill the purpose of Orwellian doublethink all the time:  Having a new big-screen TV is good.  Being in debt is bad.  Let's finance a new big-screen TV.  That's a really simple version, because in that kind of case there might not be much conscious recognition of the dissonance. There doesn't seem to be much resistance to this unconscious doublethink, but it seems to be harder to grasp the advantages of working with it purposefully on a personal level.  I've had a hell of a time explaining it, anyways.

The way I understand and work with this is in regards to two ideas or sets of ideas that have equal functional validity (i.e. they are good working concepts for what I'm trying to accomplish) but may both rest on sets of assumptions that are mutually contradictive.  Often, it's a case of not throwing the baby out with the bath-water; just because you're working with a given idea or concept doesn't mean you need to buy whole-hog into the overarching framework of that concept.

Not that I don't think about sex, but I think I've put more effort and action (if not necessarily think-time) into how not to get laid.
