Of course there is the belief that the blackness was a result of certain events in the past and does not taint the ancestry of white people. They either got into Phaeton's path when he proved unable to control the sun chariot or they descended from Ham who got turned black for looking at his father's private parts (hey, this was a prime justification for black slavery, so it must be true)
