Something completely different:

Can in a poetic context the term 'to run thin' be used to describe an hourglass where nearly all the sand has trickled down to the lower bulb? e.g. 'In our life's hour glass the sand runs thin' = Death is near. Or does does that sound wrong to native English ears?
