I have to put in a good word for Korean cinema here...  the East is obsessed with Korean films but it hasn't crossed to the West yet,

Korean cinema is interesting but good DVD editions are rare over here.
My only qualm is that they tend to be a bit oversentimental.
Real happy ends seem to be discouraged, although happiness in the other world is often hinted at.

While you are in East Asia movie-wise: Give Bang-Rajan a look (that's a Thai film), often described as The Alamo meets the 7 Samurai. A true hit (but quite brutal).
Knurrhähne sind eßbar aber empfehlen würde ich das nicht unbedingt.
The aspitriglos is edible though I do not actually recommend it.

Talking about Asian movies - I've seen quite an interesting Taiwanese (I think) movie the other day:

The Wayward Cloud

Interesting, and very disturbing.

East Asia seems to go through a phase of such "strangies" as Europe did during a certain period of the silent films. Given the "acceptable" level of the time that would even include the erotic aspects.

Yes, that's true... many of the dramas end with most of the lead characters dead (see especially 'Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance').   Mind you, it's a bit of a refresher when one is used to the mandatory predictable happy endings offered by Hollywood, and probably part of the reason I like them.

Dodge rom-coms unless you're a big fan of cheese and slapstick, especially and typically the 'nice guy' male lead undergoing constant abuse and rebuke from the female lead (if you like that kind of thing try 'My Sassy Girl' or 'My Wife is a Gangster'; the second was almost worth it for the shoddy subtitling in the version I had - terrible grammar and typos yet a perfect grasp of N. American slang).

There's a preponderance of (cold) war movies, too, but many of them are very good - JSA comes to mind, but then again I'm a fan of director Park Chan-Wook and this was one of his first big films.

The latest Korean movie I watched was 'The Host', a monster flick.  OK, but too much monster screen time for my tastes... I prefer suspense over special effects.  And as usual, a bittersweet ending as Swato notes (not to drop spoilers, but the setup for a happy ending is there and is yanked at the closing scene and replaced with a more sentimental one less satisfying to Western tastes).  Korean 'ghost' movies tend to be better and not as dependent on small children with pale makeup as Japanese horror.

I have a Thai horror movie called 'The Eye' kicking about, but m'lady refuses to watch it as it's rumored to be very scary.  I'll have to check it out when she's not around.

The German edition of Undercover Police Woman has subtitles that lag more and more behind the action. It's a wee bit difficult to follow, if it takes a minute before the translation to the spoken words appears (and is not marked for speaker).

Have you seen Bin-Jip (Empty Houses)?

So, we need a Last Post song that could serve as the Title song for the Last Post movie (that should not be an Alamo Last Post or the like).

Save the Last Post for Me.

You can Post
Every Post with the one who gives you the eye
Let them hold you tight
You can smile
Every smile for the one who'd like to spell you right
'Neath the monitor light
But don't forget who's postin' you last
And in who's post you're gonna be
Oh, Kiyo, save the last post for me

Oh I know
That the postin's fine like sparklin' wine
Go and have your fun
Key-in and sing
But while we're apart don't give your heart to anyone
And don't forget who's postin' you last
And in who's post you're gonna be
Oh, Mero, save the last post for me

You can post
Go and carry on till the night is gone
And it's time to go
If someone asks
If you're all alone, can they take you home
You must tell them no

And don't forget who's postin' you last
And in who's past you're gonna be
Oh, Swato, save the last post for me
And don't forget who's postin' you last
And in who's post you're gonna be
Oh, Aggie, save the Last Post for me
Oh, Goatie, save the Last Post for me
Oh, Opas, save the Last Post for me
Hey Mongo Baby, save the Last Post for me
AnonImat0, save the Last Post for me
And Q, my darlin', save the Last Post for me
All you Pirates, save the last post for me

Oh, Toadfish (dramatic pause) save the Last Post for me
