Considered it; I could probably buy an island in the Philippines for cheaper than getting a piece of land here.  I am currently trying to be Canadian, though, and let the world come to my doorstep.  I find ex-pat'ing it to be somewhat distasteful, for some reason.

Depends on the area - MILF (snerk) and friends are mostly down south around Mindanao, the rest of the country is quite peaceful (and Catholic, fwiw).  I was in one town where some Americans had been kidnapped from a posh hotel and beheaded a few months previous to our visit, but we weren't afraid (we did get almost attacked by crazy people on two separate occasions; thankfully there are guards with guns all over the place that are amenable to saving foolish tourists from lunatics swinging 4x4 chunks of lumber or throwing fist-sized rocks).
