Well, he would fit with the RW mob in one aspect. His vocabulary was proverbially small (some say just 500-600 words, about 1000 is more likely*).
He was by no means stupid and also an inventor of renown but obviously considered very simple speech to be fully sufficient.
Mabye his success can be partially explained by people notoriously underestimating him. Who'd expect to be outwitted by a septuagenarian with a simplistic speech pattern?

Come on, just because he was a bit conservative.  I remember Adenauer's time very well.  He got the Bundesrepublik off to a very good start.

Sadly, you also have to know German to get this ghastly wordplay.  It seems to mean milk is to be heard before dangers  but actually can be bent in German to mean (?) the milk lorry has just pulled up.

You confuse audire (hear) and audere (dare) in the first part but got it correct in the second.
