No, pistols are difficult to shoot - start with a rimfire .22 rifle.  Not much kick, and not too loud.  Good enough for shooting grouse, when you move from plinking cans to gunning down dinner.

I got my first gun for my 10th birthday, but I probably learned to shoot by 5 (my sister certainly did, if not younger - she's 2 years after me so it's not impossible she first squeezed a trigger at 3).

Around here it would be wild boar. Berlin has enough green pathways for them to get from outside the city right to the center.

Were bear attacks that frequent?

A gun is actually a fairly foolish tool for defense against bears - at least anything a child could pack, and even in the case of larger firearms.  We did have the odd bear, cougar or moose wander through my neighbourhood.

We were never permitted to pack guns about, and shooting as kids was just for fun.  I did most of my target practice with a pellet gun, but Dad would take us out shooting (beer cans and the like - no wanton killing) on occasion.  As I got older, I started hunting grouse with Dad a bit - he'd pack the deer gun and I'd keep my eyes peeled for birds.

Calgary is 1m people, but we still get the odd moose in the city.
