Hmm... good question - at the big sour plants, I think it's elementary sulphur because there are HUGE blocks of it sitting there (warehouse size).  For some of the small tank-vent type scrubbers, it may be something different.

75% potassium nitrate and 10-15% of sulphur and charcoal each.
Less trivial than it sounds. One has to choose the right wood and take care that the sulphur is not too acidic/sour.
Crystallized sulphur is usually the best (in Europe traditionally from the Aetna volcano).
The mixing process is also quite sophisticated and affects the power of the powder significantly.
Many recipes also include traces of other substances that allegedly stabilize the mixture, improve the burn and reduce the residue.
