If the counting variable isn't a long integer then every page that calls the number will crash. If the database field isn't longint then it will generate an error everytime the poster tries to update it.

In my old Pascal days it went to -32767 and counted on from there.
This was especially inconvenient when I got a new highscore on some video games and ended up with seemingly less than zero points.
