I didn't get the point of diamonds until I actually bought diamonds.  They can be breathtaking.

My preferences run more towards black spinel (cheap!), but if money was no object (i.e. I could not do something useful with it or give it to someone who needed it), I could easily be persuaded to sport a brown asscher cut diamond.

Overall, I like precious metals more than stones.

Back in my medieval re-enactment days, there were a few of us that also had contact with the SCA. Apparently, some guy working in the aerospace industry in California had managed to get a titanium mail hauberk manufactured for him, and wore it to a few fights. According to anecdotal evidence, he got failry battered and bruised, since while the titanium mail was very resistant to penetrating attacks, it apparently had too little mass to effectivly absorb the blunt force of a blow that struck home. Experiments with various strange metals have apparently lead the SCA to introduce a rule of "no exotic metals" in tournament armour.

Most historical re-enactment societies would probably ban titanium armour for authencity reasons, but I do know that some fantasy LARP armourers have done nice stuff using coloured and oxidized aluminium for example -but that is for armour that is not used in actual combat, or only in boffer (soft material weapons, most often fibreglass, resin and foam rubber) combat.

For Olivier's Henry V the chainmail was actually wool with silver paint. Given that the film was shot during a summer heatwave it must have been awfully hot for the actors. On the other hand Peter Jackson got a machine developed for LotR that could 'knit' chainmail on an industrial scale (they used aluminium iirc).
Not sure what mail sharksuits are made of. Steel would be a wee bit heavy. They will not protect you against the great white though.
