I want to give a few bucks to help...  any recommendations or avoidances in regards to which charities will be able to do the most good?

I always give to "Disasters Emergency Committee" (DEC) which is an umbrella organization for these major disasters. But it's UK so not much use for you I guess.

I decided to give to International Rescue Committee due to their favourable reviews by charity-watchdog organizations - 90% of their funds are spent on programs and services.

They are based out of New York with other offices in London and Brussels.

I have half a mind to find an organization that needs on-the-ground volunteers, either now or for future reconstruction efforts, and get over there myself.  :-[

Medecins Sans Frontiers / Doctors without Borders are usually the ones I make donations to. They have a solid track record of doing lots of good work, and staying independant of political entaglements. I also have a friend who works for them in Sierra Leone, by the way.
