No, it's not really all about religion, it's about CONTROL. Religion is just an excuse for the level of control.

This is what happens when a culture that devalues women is being encouraged. There's a tie-in between a judge that behaves that way and a father that does what this one did.

That last one happens here a lot. Either the first generation immigrant parents don't like the kids integrating, or the sons turn fundamentalist and the daughters don't (never heard of it the other way round).

It may not be all about religion, but the Metropolitan Police are on record as not ever having recorded a Hindu "honour killing", out of around 12 incidents nationwide each year involving immigrants from South East Asia.  The tenets of some religions provide the excuse to override the laws and social mores of the destination culture, whereas others don't. 

Don't know how you separate the gender-discrimination policy from other aspects of the faith (if you know the answer then the Church of England would probably appreciate a postcard, the Vatican possibly not).
