One of my friends likes to do that, and then he offers the other players an insurance policy: if you pay him an up-front fee for every go-around the board, then you don't have to pay rent when you land on his properties.

Technically, the rules don't allow you to do side transactions like that, but we like to get our own little market economy going.

Opsa

Oh yeah-  Contract Monopoly is a hoot! I once played with a bunch of law students. We had stacks of mutual agreements lying around the board.

My Better Half always buys whatever he lands on. On New Years I tried that method and wound up with the only monopolized property on the board and everyone kept landing on them! Definitely a good strategy.

Yeh the protection racket. My number two son introduced that into our family when he was about minus 3. He always won (that thing where you allow the child to win without them realising was never needed ;)). It was always humiliating and he was lucky we continued to house, clothe and feed him ;D

Oh -- he'll get that idea soon enough I suppose-- at 6'4" he shouldn't have too much trouble convincing us to 'play' along with the protection plan.
My family like to put all the fines, payments, etc in the center and then it is claimed by whomever lands on 'free parking'-- naturally I hate this as I never land on 'free parking'.

Oh wow, Babe, my family used to do that and I totally forgot about it until you mentioned it. I'll suggest it next time. It'll probably be all my Monopoly cash there. I have bad luck with the Chance and Community Chest cards!
