Title: What does your desk look like?
Post by: Darlica on February 05, 2014, 02:45:50 PM

What does your desk or other place where you sit by your computer and write posts here looks like?

At another forum I used to visit we played a little game "show your desktop", one took a print screen of the computer desktop and posted it. It was rather fun to find differences and similarities between people half a world away.  :)

I'd like to widen the picture and show the whole physical desk. Are you game?

Here is my den. :D

OMFSM! You must be Swedish, it's both charming and organized.

I wouldn't dare take a pic of my current desktop as it can't hardly be more disorganized and cluttered.

I've been using the kitchen table, but under the current regime it's often cluttered and cramped. Not picture-worthy.
The house is under re-arrangement, so I'll soon have some deskspace upstairs when I take over the loft, overlooking the garden. That'll be better.

I had the same reaction as you guys when I saw this thread, but just to prove how boring my desk is, I will post a photo of it, along with my slightly less boring art table and light table.

I have two desks. This is the important one:

The other one is just for earning money (to pay for this one).

Come on guys! ;)

My desk organized?! It's clutter all over! :D (not that I'm ashamed of it, I guess it's my style)

@ Zono: Chaos is the mother of creativity  ;D

@ Aggi: If it says something about you or your current situation post it anyway prettiness has nothing to do with it. :)

@ Opsa:  :) I feel at home in your pictures! But I want to see the kitten! The one at the drawing-board!
The light table and drawing-board makes me miss my old flat and my workspace there.

@ roystonoboogie: Nice!  :D  What kind of music do you prefer to play on your "desk"? :)

I have taken a picture for you, but it will probably take ages to get it off my phone camera into the computer, and also the light is v.bad so may be too dim to see.

That particular setup looks like classic rock, '55 - '69.
There is an extra tom and heavier cymbals for blues rock '75 - '95.
There is a multi-pad synth drum with an electronic bass pedal for disco '75 - present.
There is also a rack of incidental percussion like cowbells, woodblocks, tambourines, bells and a triangle if I can be bothered. Usually I can't.

Basically I'm a musical whore with a heart of gold. If you pay me, I'll play for you; if you don't pay me, I might just do it for free because I like you. It gets me out of the house and stops me from annoying my wife.

Here´s my desk at work.

On the left, you can see the hi-vis hedgehog Darlica made for me when I took up my current position.

The background picture on the monitor is the coat of arms for the local municipiality that we collaborate with here in Stockholm and rent our local offcies from. Their wonky IT system also means that I have to keep everything important on my computer desktop, otherwise it risks getting lost in their network servers.

The book on the right is  Fahrdynamik des schienenverkehrs, a german text book on the physics of railway operations. There's nothing like handing out photocopies of four pages of equations and tables in german to the eager-beaver trainees to make them realize that, no, they don't have to learn everything about how brake force is calculated right now.  ;)

The blue label on my desktop computer says "Dare to refuse Facebook" in Swedish. The thing leaning in the window is a cab signal display from some very old rolling stock from the Stockholm metro.

On the left is a stack of paper a k a my bad conscience -documentation from a course for minder drivers that I held a while ago and really ought to have processed by now, but haven't done so. Well, if they have been laying about for so long, another week won't hurt.

That looks like the desk of a productive person.  :)

(I especially like the "Dare to Refuse facebook" message, but don't tell anyone... they may not "like" me!  :P )

This is cool, seeing these workshops!

One keyboard for the left hand, one for the right hand, and a centrally mounted one to bang your head against!   ;)

There must be a pair of glasses nearby... multiple monitors are hard on the eye, in my experience.

 to daring to refuse Facebook, Lindorm. I'm running a privateering campaign against those blaggarts, and winning.

@Darlica...  it's not so much that the table's a mess, but that I don't feel like it's much of a 'home' in desk terms.  I more frequently use my laptop on my lap in the living room.  I haven't had much of a presence at home this year, just sleeping and occasionally eating. The household is in the middle of an upheaval, so it does have to do with my current situation, I suppose, but I'd rather get it back to a 'me' desk instead of a temporary squat.  At that point I'm happy to show my clutter.

....also can't be arsed to haul out the camera and upload a photo at the moment.  ;)

If your laptop has a camera, have it take a selfie in the mirror!

The term "selfie" still sounds strange to me.  Too much like "quickie" for my tastes...  :o

I've never figured out how to use the camera on the laptop (used to skype a little on the old machine, I guess).  I'm always tempted to put a piece of tape over the camera like I used to do.

Good luck with that. Mine does not stay tidy for long. Maybe I should put a vase of tulips on it, as Darlica does, to shame myself into keeping it nice.

My other, less interesting desk. I spend a lot of time out on visits and at meetings. I come back to the office, people have put stuff on my desk. Not always sure why - my boss' leadership style is to take on a piece of work, put the funding in the bank, and hand the piece of paper that describes the piece of work to whoever he wanders past. If he can't find anyone, he'll just leave it on my desk.

I cannot see anything even remotely looking like that. I hate the filling of these in any case.
And Mozart was neither an Austrian nor a German. Salzburg was an independent country at the time.
I think the last thing I played on that ancient audio device was an early Russian opera.

Eh, I was making an American joke, as here they are sometimes called French fries, which has nothing to do with the French. No, wait a minute, I guess your crisps are more like our chips, which in England are more like French Fries. I'm so confused!

Personally at my desk I am playing "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy" and a bunch of thrilling John Phillip Sousa marches as I salute the US flag with one and and type with the other. PLUS- I'm eating some kind of US food, but I can't think of what it could be at the moment. Everything pretty much originates from elsewhere around here.

I try to do as much as possible electronically. I can get work email and appointments on my phone, I have a shared Google drive full of the resources I need (I have a natty little Android tablet that backs up everything I put on the drive, so even with no internet access I can give out information). Because I run an information line, I always have lots of posters, business cards, trolley tokens, stress toys, and my current favourite - a branded fridge magnet whiteboard.

We considered 'hot-desking', but because so much of our work is reactive to other people's crises we could never plan in advance accurately enough to make it work. I'd far rather be out doing home visits than sit at a desk, though.
