Last Night of The Proms
Yet another example of cost-cutting, the BBC recycle this EVERY year..... it only needs slight changes to the voice over Scandalous.
In fact, I am going to take a leaf out of their book and recycle this post.
Singing along new Cthulhufied versions to original soundtracks running through my head.
Woe is us for the Old One's coming
Who so long slept in dark R'lyeh
In the swamp hear the cultists drumming
And the screams of the victims that they slay
...
I am singing along to Peter Paul and Mary's 10 Years After album.
And now Trout Fishing in America's "My Hair Had a Party Last Night", which was burned onto the end of the disc, and then who knows what??
Mettalica is coming to town, November 22nd--- this is better than Christmas IMHO. Currently I have 'nothing else matters' running in the brain.
I have to work on my Scottish accent or I have to limit myself to whistling along some of my favorite songs ::)
Neighbourhood by Space
;D
Dixie Chicks (my cd, this time!): "Goodbye Earl" ;D
E-Pro by Beck.
Sola camisola (a traditional song I sang long time ago when I was in the school chorus).

It is for the best if I never raise my voice in song.
However, Swato, if you wish to practice your Scottish accent (can I recommend choosing a Edinburgh or Islands regional accent, as they are the most pleasing to the ear), then I am your elephant. Going by the "What are you listening to?" thread, I'm going to guess your a Corries fan. If so, I applaud your impeccable taste in music.
Non, Je ne regrette rien
I have to sing it a lot

There are people that consider them pure anathema (Eeek, they are commercial and they do their own versions of songs!)
I had never heard of them until a few months ago I was looking on youtube for stuff for the Choral Squids (almost renamed the Tartan Squids as a result ).

Not a very nice song, but it's what they were playing at the hookah bar last night. I'm notorious for hearing a bar or two and then getting it stuck in my head for days.
Whatever happened to those irritating summer songs that you hated but couldn't help humming for months anyway? Did House kill them all off?
Dr House? He could kill anything off. Easily.
Never seen that. Laurie is too stuck in my head as Bertie Wooster so watching him do surgery would be a behind-the-sofa job.
Also not very keen on hospital drama. Strikes me as cheating to achieve dramatic tension by regularly bumping people off.
They aren't real people that they bump off ;)
Beagle ~~~ serious news
Just run your personality profile through the TV watchers analysis programme. It found a severe flaw. Devotion to Midsomer does not match your stated reason for dislinking hospital dramas. I think you have a problem.

Tell me about it! Consistency isn't my strong point.
Anyway, You watch Midsomer for the mad secondary characters, you don't really care about the plot. I saw a John Nettles interview once where he reckoned there was one episode that had an unexplained body left over at the end.
P.S. How do you dislink a hospital drama? Expunge it from the internet so no one can find it ?

Still, you're doing better than me. Really must stop going on musical nostalgia trips on YouTube. I've got Alphaville's "Big In Japan" stuck in my head. If it doesn't leave soon I may have to shoot it out. Swap you for "Wir fahren gegen Engeland" ?

Powderfinger by Neil Young , must be one of my top ten tunes .
It pops into my head every few months for the past 30 years .
I'm gonna convert it to pirate .
Egads, I wish I had a Neil Young song, but no- it's Neil Sedaka's "Calendar Girl", I guess because I just changed my calendar. With me, the more obnoxious the song, the more likely it is to get stuck in my head. It's hell, I tells ya!
At a party Long Ago, a guy taught me how to sing like Neil Young. All you do is lie as limply as humanly possible in a chair and sing like you're too exhausted to move. Try it. It really works!
" Oi luv , oi luv , oi luv me calendarrrrrrr gurl ...."

Y'arrrggghh, that makes me think of Olive Oyl's song from the "Popeye" movie:
"He's tall
Good lookin'
And he's large
He's large
Large
Tall
Large
So large
And he's mine
He's not a mandolin
Oh no
He's an accordian
I'll have to squeeze him each night to keep him warm
Warm
Oh...
He's virile
And he's strong
Strong
He's strong
Strong
And he's large
Large
Large
Large
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo dah dah dah
Dah dah dah
Dah dah dah
He's got money and respect
That's true
He's better than the rest
That's true
He may not be the best
But he's large
And he's mine
Large
Large
Large
Large
Mine
Mine
Mine
Mine
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo dah
Dah dah dah
Dah dah dah
It may seem funny but it's not
Oh no
I'm thankful for what I've got
Me too
It may not be a lot
But he's large
And he's mine"

Singing along to Alphaville's "Forever Young"
(Bit late for me, but "Forever middle-aged" doesn't have the same ring to it).
La La La (actual winner of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1968)
I am finding it dificult to sing along, due in part to my spectacular lack of any musical ability whatsoever, and in part because there are no voice parts at all in Adagio for Strings.
I am however, trying to sound like a violin.
Mummy, stop the nasty people looking at me like that...
I thought lack of talent was prerequisite for singing along
Might be why we're not writing our own stuff (Qwerty excluded).
Coldplay's Viva la Vida.
I write my own but rarely compose for the singing voice (only instrumental*)

Ironically, that's my choice too.
Since a lot of links in the songbook became broken because the videos were removed from youtube, I had to get the soundfile in order to upload them to my own youtube channel (under a name that is unlikely to draw attention).
I have a double CD with 39 versions of the song.
I only know three versions (in German that is). Think I prefer the Lemper one to the more stacatto ones, though I suppose the latter are more true to the idea of The Beggar's Opera being punk rock to Handel's "stadium prog rock" :) .
Well, it makes a difference whether Satchmo sings it or Brecht himself or Eartha Kitt (no Vera Lynn or Enya recording I know of, though ;))
Some of the less known stanzas are very apt for the current financial crisis
10. Und die Fische, sie verschwinden,
Doch zum Kummer des Gerichts
Man zitiert am End den Haifisch,
Doch der Haifisch weiß von nichts
11. Und er kann sich nicht erinnern
Und man kann nicht an ihn ran,
Denn ein Haifisch ist kein Haifisch
Wenn man nicht beweisen kann.
12.Und so kommt zum guten Ende
Alles unter einen Hut.
Ist das nötige Geld vorhanden,
Ist das Ende meistens gut.
13.Dass nur er im Trüben fische,
Hat der Hinz den Kunz bedroht.
Doch zum Schluss vereint am Tische
Essen sie des Armen Brot.
14. Denn die einen sind im Dunkeln,
Und die andern sind im Licht.
Und man siehet die im Lichte,
Die im Dunkeln sieht man nicht
(and the fishes disappear
but to the court's annoyance
when they call on the shark
the shark knows nothing
For he can't remember anything
and it is impossible to get at him
for a shark is not a shark
if one cannot prove it
And so everything at last
comes to a good end and reconciliation
because if enough money is at hand
the end is good in most cases
That he fished in troubled/muddied water
Hinz blamed Kunz
But in the end they sit together at the table
and eat the bread of the poor people*
For some are in the dark
and the others in the light
One only sees those in the light
those in the dark one sees not)
*in the sense that they consume the possessions taken from the poor, not that they turned out poor
No slight on your translations skills, but I've always thought this song works much better in German than English (and it's not often I know enough of the words to compare the two).
That tranlation was apure hack job and I know that babelfish would produce nonsense.
There are some idioms in there that have no strict English equivalents.
E.g. 'im Trüben fischen' = muddy the water, so the fishes are more likely to bite because they are less able to identify the bait as a trap. = create confusion in order to fool people more easily
or 'unter einem Hut bringen/kommen' = bring everything under a (single) hat = find a solution that suits everyone involved/ find a way to have it both ways (e.g. being a good mother while having a full-time job and other obligations)

I have posted a Choral Squid Omnibus pdf with updated link list in the announcment folder (Lectors Wanted thread)

I was listening to the radio at work today when The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down by The Band , It brought back the memory of Joan Baez's performance here at Massey Hall last fall .
I originally favoured her version when I first heard it way back when , now I believe I favour the band's rendition , there is such an emotive , plaintive quality to the vocals that I didn't like so much as a child but certainly appreciate now .
I'm going to sing in the shower now .
