for example (whisky instead of vodka).  This also explains why in the Sherlock Holmes stories Dr. Watson attempted to cure almost everything by tipping brandy into the patient (when he wasn't skipping surgery chasing gigantic hounds).

Well, back in my days in the Royal Australian Navy, I knew a fellow officer who used to swear that at the first sign of a cold he would retire to his cabin with a bottle of Bundy OP (Bundaberg rum Over Proof) and that by consuming said bottle in one sitting, he would emerge the next day with nary a sniff or cough in sight.  It is true that I cannot remember him ever suffering a cold.  OTOH, he did get cashiered for alcoholism....

Same with my old (restaurant) boss, although his brand of choice was Lemon Hart.  My grandfather always said rum was strictly medicinal.  I practice preventative medicine, personally.... ;D

Alcohol is truly a wonder drug!

A hot toddy or hot buttered rum sure helps when one is chilled and damp. Like now- but I'm at work so have to settle for hot tea or coffee- still could be worse.
