Never watched Dr. Who. Never had control of TV when it was shown, never HAD a TV when not living with someone else.

Forgive my ignorance, please.

Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

Well now Dr. orders are get thee to the nearest netFlix (or video by mail of your choosing) and begin to correct some of this dearth of the good Dr. in your life. Sorry you missed it growing up- nothing compares- they are great as an adult- but something about watching them on PBS, sort of late at night as a kid that really sticks with one.
Go to Dr.Who.com and go to games and find the Daleks game(the Dr. Who version of having a smiting stick :D) Daleks don't mean to be evil- they were just genetically engineered that way!

For some reason I recalled a Startrek voyager (I believe) episode in which they find an amnesiac smart bomb.

Or was it more in the spirit of Jessica Rabbit's "I'm not bad, I was just drawn this way"?  ;)

I think the history was that the wars on Skarro led to genetic mutations and Davros then went further to produce the "ultimate" power-mad, amoral mutation. I think its on record that their (series) creator Terry Nation, was influenced by the history of the Nazis and of eugenics experiments.

I think Davros, the Daleks, Cybermen and Master started off in the series as bad through-and-through but ultimately this "born bad" idea clashed with the show's rational humanism and was watered down.
A bit like the transition from all aliens needing immediately blowing up in 1950s American films to E.T.

Still wouldn't recommend a dalek as babysitter though.

Right- the original intent was to mutate the Skarro to their final incarnation to see how they could/would survive but Davros then took it to the evil scientist level and took out the compassion/"humanity" genetics part and made them cold/mad/evil/bastards.

The Dalek was originally simply a transport device for the organism that the Skarros would eventually become-- it was not called a Dalek at first

It is very Nazi like - uniforms-darkness-

Where the'yre doing the harvesting on my way to work the scarecrows have re-emerged in the fields. Lots of them per field.

After "The Family of Blood" it's a bit discombobulating.  Won't go into details in case that hasn't aired everywhere yet.

By the way, failing a last minute surprise it looks like we should give Tom Baker the prize. Any suggestions for something suitable?

"The champagne magnum of Rassilon" perhaps? Which was a good year when you have access to all years?

My favorite Dr. Who?  Tom Bakker.  Why?  The scarf.  That's all.  Just the scarf.

I picked Eccleson , because I never followed the Doc much until I became enthralled by the production quality of the recent series.
