Today, my totally disabled (tumors up and down her spine, damage from previous surgeries to remove other tumors, extreme pain from all this and more) friend ran out of benefits on the 'indigent care' coverage she gets from the local  Council of Governments. (In our county, it's $5,000 a year. Next county over, it's $15,000 a year.) She often cannot feel her own legs, she's taken several falls recently and is in a wheelchair.

She has NO pain medication left, except some of mine. She's normally on a fentanyl patch and vicodin, with some Actiq for breakthrough pain.  A previous doc had her on so much dilaudid that she wasn't coherent a lot of the time. This is a woman with SEVERE medical issues.

Social Security has been "determining" her level of disability for over 5 years. She SHOULD have Medicare, she SHOULD have something...she's worked all her life, paid into the system, and she literally has NO income, just $120 a month in food stamps...and a common-law spouse that's dying, and will be in a nursing home permanently.

In a country with all the billions of dollars WASTED by the government, paid out to "contractors" in a fit of privatization that is giving the lifeblood of the American People to the corporations---there's no programs, nothing to do to help people in this situation. When Michael dies, her only 'income'--his SS, stops, if she doesn't lose it to the nursing home charges.

It just leaves me speechless that the medical situation in this country is being so manipulated for scare factors (the big Boogie Man, Socialized Medicine is just so much political rhetoric and bullshit) that people are allowed to suffer and die on a daily basis so that big corporations can get away with the crap they do....and the owners of the big corporations can give pennies back to help the 'unfortunate'.

It makes me ashamed of my country, almost as much as the plight of our veterans does.
