Announcements / Monastery Database Problem
July 30, 2008, 01:26:12 PM
I have to apologize.  I changed something in ISPConfig and the database was dropped.  Also it appears that the backup has been failing and I missed it.  I have no idea what caused this to happen but I will find out.  It looks like we lost all of the new stuff since the Monastery was moved to the new server.  I am soooo sorry and this won't happen again.

Sorry,
MB

Edit:
I do see what the problem was with the back up.  ISPConfig uses a different schema than the original.  When I changed the backup job I didn't select the new schema.  The back up job has been fixed and is working properly now.

In ISPConfig you can transfer a site to a reseller that doesn't have access to MySQL and when you do that the databases get dropped.

Again, I am soooo sorry.  I'm just mortified.

Please forgive me!  :'(

Announcements / Monastery Downtime
July 17, 2008, 03:43:23 PM
Hi Everybody,

In the next few days I am going to move the Monastery from DreamHost to our own private server.  I'm not exactly sure when I will do it.  If you see a message about a "bad httpd conf" you'll know it happened.  If you see that message, give the Monastery a couple hours and try again.

Moving the Monastery now will facilitate and easier conversion to the upcoming platform(Joomla 1.5 upgrade and phpBB3) conversion.

Any questions?

Thanks,
MB

Site Content / Mini-Calendar
May 07, 2008, 11:16:46 AM
Hi,

I took the Mini-Calendar off the home page.  I discovered that it's slowing down the loading of the home page.  The calendar is still on the site just not on the home page.

Thanks,
Darren

Science / A Math Question
February 20, 2008, 12:36:43 PM
I have a math question.  I'm not good at math, but I have a problem and I don't even know how to ask the question properly.

I have two graphs that I want to be able to analyze mathematically.  At some point the graphs may be the same but not necessarily at the same point on the X axis.  The Y axis may also be higher or lower at the point on the X axis where they converge.  The two graphs will differ slightly or even more than a little.  The point of my question is how to find the points on the graphs where they converge the most.  Does any one know how to put this question in the proper terminology so I can find an equation that can compare the two graphs mathematically?  I need to find the delta between the X and Y axes of the two graphs where they converge.

I'm sure I could do this with a program by brute force but I'm looking for something fast and elegant.

Announcements / Planned Maintenance at DreamHost
January 29, 2008, 08:54:21 AM
Looks like there's some upcoming planned maintenance at DreamHost.

QuoteDue to continued space and power constraints in our primary data center,
we will be moving the "randy" cluster to one of our newer data centers.
This move will begin Friday, February 8, at 10PM PST, and is expected to
last up to 8 hours, until Saturday, February 9, 6AM PST. All web servers,
mail servers, file servers, and MySQL servers in the randy cluster will be
unreachable during this time.

I made my own beer a while back.  First time for me.  The wife says if she were on a deserted island she'd be able to choke it down.  I'm gonna chalk that up as "good."

Snark and Rant / Llama Council Email
August 09, 2007, 11:36:18 PM
I got a couple of email for the llamacouncil.org site.  Clearly people don't read my home page.  It's all a spoof of course but anyway, how should I answer?

QuoteMy 2 year old female has developed a softball sized swelling in the cheek area on the left side
of her face. Suggestions or thoughts on what is happening. Please advise. Thanks. Tom.

and...

Quote4 years ago I was given 2 llamas: 1 male, 1 female. The person who gave them to me did not know
if they were related to each other, or if either had been neutered.  The male has never shown
the slightest interest in the female.  I was told that if he had been gelded I would see where
the testicles had been sliced.  But no such scarring exists.  Why will they not breed?

LOL!

Announcements / Now Accepting Donations
July 22, 2007, 11:17:17 PM
Hi Everybody,

We have a donate button on the home page so that we can help offset the expenses of running the site.  Eventually, we'd like to do more than just run the site, but this is where we are now. Don't feel you must donate to participate, because not everybody has the same ability to spend money. We'd rather have you than your money any day.  Someday, we'll try to be a real, grown-up non-profit, but for now, we just want to have a server that serves!

The donation box is on the right side of the home page.  Donations go to my company InnoStorm Technologies Inc.  InnoStorm Technologies is the company that currently pays to host the monastery website.  Reason being is because there is not yet a monastery entity to donate to. The donated money belongs to the monastery of course.  Feel free to donate as much or as little as you like, or not at all.  It's completely up to you.

If you donate please post the amount here so we can keep track of how much money the monastery has.  If you would like to remain anonymous, please PM Opsa with the amount you donated.

Thanks,
MB

PS.
Thanks Chatty for helping me with putting words together to form sentences.

Here's an interesting side of the Global Warming debate.  It's a seventy-three minute video.  Some of the politics I disagree with.  The science of it was very interesting.

I saw this.  http://www.dod.mil/ddre/prize/topic.html

How about we brainstorm about this and get some money for the monastery?

I know it's for the US Military but, somebody will win the money.  It may as well be us.  At least we could use it for something good.

Snark and Rant / The legal limit for minors
July 06, 2007, 07:31:10 PM
Girl, 11, charged with DUI after a high-speed chase

QuoteDuck declined to release the girl's blood alcohol level but said a blood test at the hospital showed it was higher than .02, the legal limit for minors.

There's a legal limit for minors?  I was thinking minors couldn't drink.  Maybe they can in Alabama?
