September 21st is officially the International Day of Peace . Gimmicky? Maybe. But this kind of gimmick is something we can probably live with.

According to the website, the United Nations decided in 2002 that:
"Peace Day should be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples...This day will serve as a reminder to all peoples that our organization, with all its limitations, is a living instrument in the service of peace and should serve all of us here within the organization as a constantly pealing bell reminding us that our permanent commitment, above all interests or differences of any kind, is to peace."

The Toadfish Monastery practices peacemaking skills through the art of tolerance. We believe that we can stand by our beliefs while also taking care to listen for truths from others.

What can we do to observe this occasion?

Condemn the violence in Yemen today (20th) and mourn the fact they won't be observing Peace Day.*

Opsa, you can read that phrasing to say that part of the purpose is to strengthen the ideals of peace within each person.  Take some time to find some inner peace, and spread it wherever your reach is. Start at home, if there's something unpeaceful there.  Make peace with someone you've had a longstanding grudge against, or something in your past that won't leave you at peace. How is the world going to make any real inroads to the grand ideals of peace if we can't suss out the small ones?

And yeah... go have a peace of cake! :cake:

Happy birthday, Mini-Zone!!!

Those are great ideas, Aggie. Let peace start with each of us and go outward.

At noon today I stopped painting a set piece and sang "Dona Nobis Pacem" (Let there be Peace). No-one heard me but the tree outside the window. I hope it liked it.

I noted it was also World Alzheimer's Day.  Let's just forget about all the fussing and fighting, eh? ;D

on a serious note, my grandmother got happier as she developed dementia. She kept her sense of humour, and forgot all the things that bothered her.  :( :-\ :)

Hey- that is a neat idea.

I watched both local and national news that day and neither mentioned Peace Day. I think the cause of peace needs more attention.

anthrobabe

It does, it does--- maybe the more we all wage peace and love against our fellow human (sigh, even the bad ones who tailgate us in their haste to get to wherever they are going) and the more vocal we are it will begin to get the attention it deserves.
