Title: Newbie (well, obviously!)
Post by: Booty on December 14, 2007, 05:03:39 PM
Hi!
I am Booty.
Have been around the CoFSM for over a year, only just heard of you lot yesterday in the general "WTF is Bobby doing now?" Conversations.
Thought I would stick a toe in and test the water :)
Not used to this "being polite" thing, but I will give it a go ;P

Welcome Booty! Your post sounds polite enough so you should be fine. ;)

Feel free to add your thoughts.

Hiya Abs - welcome to the site from another noob - Bobby still moderating?

Welcome, Booty!

It's not that we're so much into being polite, but we do like to practice mutual respect. Our Pirate's Cove can be quite the rowdy place, but it's understood that all crudeness there is mutual and can be taken with a grain of salt and a dram of rum.

A dram or two, at least.
Hullo, Booty! Welcome.

Welcome aboard Booty.  Don't be afraid to express youself here, we are a very diverse lot, we just try to avoid getting personal and abusive.  One big advantage of that is that the Siblings will allow you express you opinion without trying to shout you down.  Have fun.

Yarr!  Don't be listnin ter them blaggards!  Come over to the Pyrates and 'ave at ye!  Jest doan take enny IOUs from th' buckoes...  Also, we prefer Captain's Delight ter that namby pamby rum muck... (See the Portsmouth Pirate Public School for the history of Captains Delight - ed)

We had a vote a while ago to drop the  :censored: poilteness. Was I the only one who knew about it?

I know all about FSM (as if) but what is CoFSM?  Is that like some support group for co-dependents of Pastafarians?

Welcome Booty. ;D

CoFSM stands for Church of the FSM - the venganza site :D
Thanks for all the welcomes!
I am having a hell of a time at home at the moment, but will try to have a look around soon.
So do you get many people with opposite views here?
Could someone point me to a good thread to get my teeth into?

Welcome Booty! :)

I'm one of the people around here that haven't found this place though the venganza site (TOP -The Other Place is BTW a popular term for the site mentioned above).

Opposite views? Well, not opposite as much as a wide range of other views and as said on the front page "We are more interested in finding common ground than trumpeting our differences".

There isn't a hard, moderated or in anyway forced level of politeness around here, not that I've seen anyhow, so I don't think you have to worry much about that.
Are we polite here? Yes, we are, most of the time, because politeness is a very good grease on the cogs of social interaction.  :)

Read the rules and browse the place and you will get the hang of it pretty soon, I promise!

There is plenty of space for general silliness and there is The Pirates Cove for drinking rum, swashbuckeling, stealing peg legs and liberating strangers from their doubloons...
A word o' advice, be nice t' us bar wenches or t' rum will be watered down...  ;D

Welcome aboard all newbies!!!!

btw- somewhere-- not sure exactly where- but somewhere there is a thread where we say
"I'm so and so from such and such and etc."
but of course that is entirely OPTIONAL--- you be who you want to be here there and everywhere

me--- well I'm anthrobabe here and at TOP (the other place aka Venganza) and anthrobabe other places as well.

but you be you and we welcome you with open arms (we do hug a lot-- but we try and keep the pinching down a bit)

Hey Booty!

Tell us what kinda stuff you like to sink your teeth into and we'll direct you there.

We have places for pirating, politics, current events discussions, health, home, jokes and games, music, art, creative writing, and personal concerns  such as having a hell of a time at home. We can be a good support group.

Thanks!
I am mostly polite and nice I like to think - am jut having some fun chatting to the pro-gun lobby on Topix - and being nice seems to drive them potty!
I like lots of random silliness and some serious stuff mixed in - sounds like here will be just lovely! :D
I will tell you about me here as it's easier!
I am 35, married to a gorgeous, but not so chatty pastafarian, 2 boys aged 7 and 5, 2 cats aged 7 months and 6 months.
I work as a urology nurse (mostly willies)- that tends to scare people a lot :)
Anything else you'd like to know?

A nurse!!

Not in our specific field of interest--Griffin and I are BIG fans of the medical profession, OK, big supporters ummm...we're both not that fond of arrogant doctors, but then again, neither are most nurses...right?

To quote Animaniacs, Hello Nurse!!

(Griffin and I are both cancer patients--fairly long term, and have multitudes of respect for the nursing profession, notsomuch for some of the doctoring profession at times.)

 Heh. You may find that at times you feel like you've been transported into the psych ward. We're mostly harmless, even the Squiddies. Usually... :halo:

I'm fairly sure LOGIC would drive them batty, much less niceness.

The med threads will be right up your alley. And I dunno how you feel about politics or such, but we have some fairly active threads on that.

Heh! Why am I thinking on the 'weak' gender? (just as a note, back home it was in common use the term 'weak gender' [sexo debil] in reference to women, which never made sense to me. All the women around me looked everything but weak, and I was the one that felt weak in their presence. It is obvious now that the 'weak gender' is the male  :o ;) )

My sister-in-law once said: When a man can give birth to a 12 pound baby and still be willing to say "Next pregnancy", I will consider the possibility that a woman MIGHT be "the weaker sex".

I did consider "big" and "strong" might raise a debate. I should explain. They have a particular imprinted meaning inside my brain.

The teacher in my class, 4 year olds, every morning break, asked for a "big strong boy" to attend to the milk crate. Even at this young age, it was obvious to me that the majority of lads that answered the requests were neither bigger nor stronger than many of the girls. I was highly attuned to adults telling whoppers as my mother always insisted everything was nice and lovely even when things were actually horrific and unbearable. Translating mis-representation of facts had thereby already become a survival technique. Hence "big" and "strong" became "masculine, but with an awareness that females may also have this masculine trait*. Further, even very small men, frail, and shaky, are big and strong.

*early dawning of feminism.... I doubt my parents realised what was happening to their small girl ;)

Apologies to Booty for hi-jacking this thread. The Mods and Admins allow us to be so undisciplined ;D

Talking of modern, I just heard about the man who was abducted to Mars by aliens and got sent back to earth where the CIA interrogated him, asking was Mars a more advance society than ours, to which he replied, yes much more, ... and they asked by how much.... and he said about six weeks.

Oh well, I guess it's all in the timing !!

(joke courtesy of a comedian I couldn't put a name to on Dawn French's interviewing male comedians show).

I think it will be a grand change from topix just from what I have read so far.

The Pub's in the Tide Pool, which is a slightly more restricted area, for what we call Toadfish Novices (this is a kind of monastery, even if only in name, and the Abbot is female.) People who 'play nice' in Open Water soon get invited deeper inside.  :)

Edit: We do like to wait a little to see if someone is going to stick around, or is just passing through...  Both lots of people are welcome here, but we won't put a label on yer chair for just anyone... :P

Hey there again, WN! Somehow I just felt you'd check in here sooner or later.

Not a bad idea, though, having a public  pub as well as a private pub and a  pirate pub. As long as it begins with "p", there ought to be a pub involved, somehow.

A number of us are parents, here. Toadfish are natural critters and do not take vows of ...well anything, other than just basic intent to be decent to one another.

Edit: We do like to wait a little to see if someone is going to stick around, or is just passing through...  Both lots of people are welcome here, but we won't put a label on yer chair for just anyone... :P
Totally understandable.  I tend to stick around interesting folk.  So guess I'll see ya when I see ya at the pub.
Love Light and Laughter to everyone

Welcome, Nymph!

If someone offers you fish head stew, run the other way!
You don't have to tell me something like that twice!
I'll be on the watch.

Maybe we newbies could have a pseudo-pub.  That way, the old timers could direct us in the Toadfish Pub (and possibly Piratin') ways.

Heh, I forgot - we also have The Vent, which is the Satanist pub / "lounge for the sinister type".  It's hiding in Snark and Rant.

No shortage of pubs, but there's always room for more.

hmmm....  we could do an internal pub crawl, y'know....

Just remember that many a pub crawl ends up as a pub drag. Some of us are just slow... ;)

Welcome aboard WN!

Generally you'll find the pirates' barks are worse than their bites.  I hope you enjoy yourself here in the monastery.

Nah, it just sounds like that when Chatty and I get singing those old songs "all over, all over, all over, all over..."
