My quest for gainful employment is (at least temporarily) over.

I am going to Belfast, working for an ecological consultancy. They told me to brush up on badgers and otters, so I'm guessing that will be what I'm surveying...

Mother was a bit concerned "Oh, Belfast, that might be a bit risky". Then I pointed out where being married to my father has taken her. Nigeria, Libya, Rwanda, Dundee....

Congratulations! Hopefully you'll like it.

You'll be Our Man Elephant in Belfast, then. Please keep in touch!

Do we need any elephants in Belfast?

I need at least one in Oxford Street charging in a north-south direction so I can cash in on my insurance

Will scratch the search in the Great White North (you'll be glad you skipped winter here in any case).

No, please don't. Still looking for a permanent position. This one has the potential to become permanent, but dependant on contracts coming in. If I can find long-term employment in the Frozen North, all to the good. I don't mind winter (despite the SAD, still my favourite season), as long I can still use the lightbox. Plus, I have the family wanderlust, and have never been to any part of the Americas...

OK, will keep my ear out.  No major leads so far (winter tends to be slow season anyways; the big hiring pushes start in the spring), but I have been chatting to co-workers and such...  advice seems to indicate that Golder might be a good choice (they are well diversified and will have need for "bugs & bunnies"* people. They're also international, so maybe a good choice for someone with wanderlust.

"Bugs and Bunnies" is a lot better that we usually get called here. "F*^£ing tree-huggers" is more common.

Not always wise to annoy people who have the authority to stop works, but lots of builders and developers are still stuck in the 1890's.

"Play nice, or me and my licence are going home. And then, if you lot so much as stick a spade in the ground, you're going to jail. Go away, and come back when you can discuss this civilly."

He wouldn't, so I left.

Cue call from consultancy manager.

Duly explained, and was told "That's outrageous. Come on back to the office. I'll put the kettle on." He told the developer to go forth and multiply as well. I liked my boss.

It's not often that you get to threaten a total ass-hat with prison time (unless you're a police officer). If you can, I heartily recommend that you do. It's wonderful seeing their face go purple in fury, safe in the knowledge that you know the legalities much better than them, and that you as an individual  hold the licence.

Still brings a smile to my face....

These people are in the same building as us, but haven't seen any vacancies advertised and don't know anyone there.  Looks like they're the right sort of area.  Might be worth a letter.

Only real contact with other companies here is if a smoker from our company knows a smoker from theirs (because they meet outside).

I'd never call an ecologist that. It's my term (with added "commie") for Linux users determined to convert you. ;)

So the smoking ban is a serious threat to the economy in more ways than tax losses. Time for a quota of at least one smoker per company.

last time I was a non-smoker I still went for breaks outside buildings because all the nicest people are smokers and it is the absolute best bonding method we have

Blimey! What on earth do you call prosletysing pure-Unix (or variants) users?

Solaris users are too busy with fsck * to give me any trouble.

* Not a misspelling, in case you were wondering.

I'm not scared, you ecologist, you.  I've survived attacks from IBM MVS/TSO and CICS users before now.
